I recently met this author, and once we connected, I knew her joy in writing and sharing books with young readers was one like my own.
Let’s get started so you can find out more about her.

Rosie: Welcome Yvetta! Tell us more about yourself.
Yvetta: I am a retired elementary teacher of 20 years, I have taught grades 1-5 and adults ESL successfully. Private English & Reading Tutor, part-time pianist for my church. My husband is the pastor.
I became an author strictly by happenstance. I was sitting under the hair dryer at my local hair salon, and this lady was asking people to read something she had written. Unbeknownst to me, the hairstylist recommended I read this lady’s work as I was a well known, sought after teacher. Not wanting to embarrass the lady I recommended she call me after sharing several insights. Two years later that same lady called me and invited me to co-author a children’s chapter book with her; “The Code Switch. ISBN# 9781468089479.
I had always wanted to write, but was disillusioned when my 1st year college professor told me my writing needed a lot of help! [“The Code Switch” book is in several local school sites and San Francisco State University, a mentor book for Masters Degree Program students majoring in Communications/English]

Rosie: That is very impressive, Yvetta. I’m sure you were thrilled to have your book included to help others.
What’s Your Biggest Challenge As An Author?
Yvetta: My biggest challenge as an author is staying the course. Meaning committing to a certain amount of time on a particular day. Even if I had no thoughts just sat there and re-read. My second challenge was that I found myself editing as I was writing. I discovered it’s best for me if I just write, get it all out, and edit last.
Rosie: Yes, having the time to sit down to write doesn’t always work. Then, when the muse hits us, we have to make little notes to use later.
I agree. Editing is hard, and I think it’s every writer’s challenge.
What Is Your Biggest Joy In Being An Author?
Yvetta: My biggest joy in being an author is seeing the eyes light up of children when I sign a book over to them.
I so enjoy doing read-a-louds in classrooms. Students are attentive, excited to meet me and I am attentive and excited to meet them even more!!!
Rosie: I hear you on that one. There is no better feeling.
