Welcome to our Leap Year 2020 #Gr8BlogHop. My author friends and I are writing about how we will celebrate this day. Some will share how they will spend their extra day. Others, will have more interesting adventures. I’m picking…
Leaping Forward and Backwards for Leap Year 2020
Let’s talk about what trends we might see in 2020. Read to the end to see what I will do with these ideas and how we will find out if they hold true for Leap Year, 2024.
I posted this image on my Facebook and Twitter pages and ask what trends everyone thought would be popular for 2020. Thanks to all of those that gave me the best answers ever.
Fashion and Home Decor Colors
Mustard color was mentioned for home decor and fashion. Another popular one is classic Blue.
Check out “Pantone’s” Facebook page to follow more color trends coming this year. Click here to find more. βΊ Pantone
We had one person tell us that they think Bell Bottoms were going to make a comeback, only this time they would be called, “Wide Leg Cut.” I looked this up and found it to be true. Sounds fun and reminds me of the 70’s. π
Sports
A Twitter viewer posted the popularity in women’s sports is growing. I have to agree. I hear girls wrestling is popular in the middle and high schools age groups now.
This viewer was also glad to hear WNBA and CT Sun women’s basketball teams were getting more respected and more visibility. I hope so, too!
Food
Pop Up Dinners and Restaurants. Honesty, I had to look this up. I have not heard of these but found them interesting. According to Wikipedia, a “Pop Up Dinner” is, “A restaurant that is a temporary restaurant. These restaurants often operate from a private home, former factory, or similar space, and during festivals. There are rules to these that should be followed like all restaurants.”
“One must:
- Create a business plan.
- Choose a location.
- Apply for insurance, permits, and licenses.
- Set up a mobile kitchen.
- Set up a temporary dining room.
- Write & price a pop-up menu.
- Get the right technology.
- Follow a marketing and PR plan.”
Another big trend is, “Dinner Meal Kits Delivery.” We did this for a month or so and it was nice having all the ingredients in one box. Ours came with meat, vegetables, spices, and the full recipe to make the meal. They were really good. I also found new recipes to try and new ways to prepare our meals I hadn’t thought about before.
I found this page and it pretty much tells you all you need to know from “To 5 Meal Delivery Services” from their Facebook page.
Personal Growth and Self Care
This has been on the rise and will continue being a trend for many years. Being more present with yourself and others is so important. I’ve always felt if we take time to take care of ourselves, we are better equipped to take care of others.
Personal growth can come in many ways.
Surround yourself with kind people and rid yourself of negative people.
Don’t compare yourself with other people, especially on social media.
Meet new, interesting people that you share the same interests.
Find ways to laugh and be happy.
De-clutter your home or anything that overwhelms you.
Audio Books
I’ve heard there will be a growth in audio books for 2020. They are great for so many reasons. They used to be mainly for the visually impaired, which they still are. More and more people are listening to them in exercise programs and running. How about just relaxing with an audio book, too? They are very good for those learning to read and struggling readers, as well.
Sign Language
Sign language courses are on the rise, according to The New York Times. Let’s hope for more of these interpreters to be present in our schools and workforce.
An author friend and teacher of this GR8BlogHop group, would be glad to share more of this with you. Feel free to write, Chris Gorges, for more questions.
Art
Art has always, always, been a fun trend over the years. Painted Rocks are a big one right now. The idea is to paint a rock to hide or give a way to brightens one day. Just painting them and keeping them is fun, too!
Remember, “Pet Rocks,” in 1975? Now, that was a big fad. π
Who has heard of Painting Classes or Paint Parties? I’ve yet to go to one but plan to someday. Look for one to go to in your town.
If you run a painting class or party, write me a note and I’d be happy to feature you on my page.
The fun painting instructions I had growing up were the “Paint by Number” landscapes. They were so much fun. Who remembers those?
TV
Renting DVD’s will always be popular but streaming TV shows are hugely popular these days. If you have Cable, you have access to millions of shows. I’m not a big TV person, but I have to admit, it’s fun to be able to find anything to watch at any given time.
It’s much different when I was growing up. We only had three channels. You had to adjust the antennas, (we called them rabbit ears,) just right or the reception was not good. Oh my. π
That’s all I could find for now and looking forward to how these trends fan out. Do you hear of any fun trends you would like to share? Please leave a comment the section below.
Oh, and how will we know if these trends stay strong or not? I thought it would be fun to write them all down and save them in a container. I’m burying them in our backyard to save to open in 2024. Do I have to do it this way? No, but it’s a fun way to do a “Time Capsule,” which I’ve never done before. I’ll report the results back to you in four years.
Included in this photo are the things I hand wrote in this blog plus a rock I painted. What other tangible items could I include to this before I bury it on the 29th of February?
It’s fun to see the unique ways people enjoy spending time. What will YOU do with your extra day? Please share in the comment section. But before you go… click over to more #Gr8Blogs for smiles and inspiration for your gift of time.
At the bottom of this post, you’ll find more inspiration and smiles from my favorite #Gr8Blogs about how they’ll celebrate a year with an extra day on 29 February.
Thanks for stopping by!
As always, Happy Reading!

I’ve been hearing a lot about audiobooks. They seem to be on the rise but they’re expensive to make. They’re convenient when you’re commuting on a train so packed you don’t have room to pull out a book.
I’ve also been meaning to do a painting class but I haven’t had a chance to do it yet.
You would do great at a painting class. I want to try one someday, too. Wished we lived closer to go together.
Audio books are expensive to make, unless you have the equipment to do it yourself. I need to check those out someday for my stories.
Thanks for stopping by, Auden. Happy Leap Day!
I have never been good at picking trends but I think anything plant-based will be even more popular as will body positivity and being yourself plus a focus on the environment. At least I hope they will be trends as they all seem good for the health of people and the planet.
Ooh, that’s a great one, Julie. I’m seeing a lot of that, too. New trends with environment are always on the rise and a great one for us to consider.
Thanks for your note today.
Happy Leap Year! π
Great blog, Rosie. I like blue being a popular color but mustard yellow for me is a big ICK!!! I’m not a fan of the condiment in general, I will not put it on my walls. Iβm not a fan of most audiobooks. I prefer to feel the pages and imagine the sounds and voices for myself. There is one series I am curious to hear on audio because of rave reviews, but that’s it. Happy leap day.
I was surprised to hear about the Mustard color myself. I guess it depends on what it’s featuring. I thought of the 70’s when I heard of that trend. Many used that color in their kitchen appliances, along with popular colors called Avocado Green. In the 80’s and 90’s, Mauve Pink and Country Blue were big hits. Interesting how the colors dates the time.
I love the real books, too. I can see how the audio books are helpful for some, though.
Happy Leap Day, Carmela. π
So many awesome trends, here, Rosie. Thanks for pulling the all these ideas together! Big fan here of mustard yellows, oranges and blues in my garden -:D. Bell bottoms…not so much. I listen to audio books almost exclusively and am addicted to them. What a fab idea to bury a time capsule in your back yard! It will be fun to check back in 2024 and see which came true.
I hope you will share pictures of your garden with all of us. Yes, those colors are great garden colors.
Thanks for letting us know about the Bell Bottoms. I will think of you when I see them in the stores now. I don’t mind a small flare, but not too much.
I know you are a big fan of the audio books which has inspired me to consider them more. I have one on hold and looking forward to it coming in. I hope the voice is right for the story. That’s the part that bothers me sometimes. The voice has to match the story, if you know what I mean.
I hope the squirrels don’t run away with my container. I’ll keep you posted on how the trends happen or don’t happen in 4 years. π
Happy Leap Year!
I also grew up with antenna TV because the cable company wanted a large amount of money to run the cable line to my dad’s house and he wouldn’t pay it! I believe we had like 5 channels. It was all good though because we loved watching the Price is Right and I often think of how my kids missed out on watching Bob Barker! We have a Roku now and they can pretty much watch whatever they want whenever they want and can pause a show too!
I have often thought about making my books into audio books. I wonder if kids listen to audio books as much as it seems like adults do.
Jessica, you know exactly how small our TV world was, too. Yes, so sad they missed out on Bob Barker.
I have not heard of Roku, but happy to hear you and your family have access to many channels.
I’d love to research about audio books for kids. Maybe we can run a poll together someday about that.
Happy Leap Year and Day, Jessica! π
What a fun article! Iβm behind on the times – never heard of pop up restaurants before, but sounds like a great idea. Love your idea of putting these trends in a time capsule. Will be interesting to see whatβs trending in four years. What goes around comes around – like bell bottoms!
Thanks so much, Julie. It was fun.
I haven’t heard of the Pop Up Restaurants either. I wonder now if it’s a regional thing?
Burying these ideas will be fun. I love finding out what sticks and what goes out. I just wished I would of been that person that invented the Pet Rocks. Look up his story. Very interesting. π
Happy Leap Year!
Hi Rosie, I never was a fan of the bell bottoms, I won’t be wearing them no matter how fashionable they become. being force to wear them in the 70’s was enough. Although I said that about flared sleeves and I now own a few of those. π
Audi books I tens to keep for long drives in the car, I’m still old school, I like the smell and feel of a print book.
Pop-up restaurants are quite handy, they come and go and you get the opportunity to try a range of foods. They were also recently used while our local university revamped Union Court where all the restaurants are. So I can see the benefits. I think they may be around for awhile.
I hope more people are beginning to understand the importance of self-care too. In this busy world, we need to learn to slow down and take care of ourselves. I will be interested to see the results of your experiment in 4 years time.
Sandra, thanks so much for your note. π
I loved the Bell Bottoms when I was a teenager, but not so much younger than that. I remember trying to ride a bike in them, that did not work. Ha!
I personally will always love the real books, too. I can see where they come in handy for many reasons. I will tell you though, I’m picky about the voices. The right voice has to fit the story. I’ve had a few that didn’t match.
Pop Up Restaurants are new to me. What a great idea for those starting out. It’s also a way they can find out what works and what doesn’t for those business owners, right?
It’s interesting to see the new Self Care trends that come our way each year. I agree, we all need to slow down in this busy world and find what works for us.
I’ll keep you posted on what changes over the next four years. Not even sure I will have this same website. You know how that goes. At least I have it written down.
Have a great week, Sandra.
Great blog, Rosie. I can get along with blue being a popular color but no mustard yellow for me. Lol I’ve always been a fan of wide legged jeans. They’re not quite as flared out as bell bottoms though, flared out just enough! I’m not a fan of audio books. I’ve tried, I really have. I just don’t seem to pay attention to them like I do when I read them myself. Now if I had a long commute, I bet they would be my best friend.
Blue is your color for sure, Rebecca!
I remember the flared Bell Bottoms being almost too big at times. A little flare doesn’t bother me, but not too much.
Audio books are great for some, not all. I like to listen to them when I draw. Love the real books the best, though.
It’s almost spring, which means we’re getting closer to summer, right?
Have a great week, Rebecca.
What a fun and unique approach to Leap Day, Rosie! I am totally hooked on my AudioBooks now. Working on a computer a good part of the day while writing, the eyes tend to get blurry after a while, which is not inducive to free time reading simply for the fun of it. Relaxing with an AudioBook and letting my ears do the work is the perfect solution. So totally agree with that prediction. Bell Bottoms? I will have to take a “wait and see” on that one. LOL! Have a wonderful Leap Day! π€ π» β€οΈ
Hi James, so great to hear from you. Thanks for your comment today.
I have some Audio Books on hold at the library. I’m looking forward to when they come in. I agree, it’s a great way to hear a story without the eye strain. Sometimes I listen to them as I’m drawing.
We will see about the “Bell Bottoms.” I hope they won’t be as wide as the ones from the 70’s. I don’t need the tripping and falling. ha! π
Happy Leap Year, James!
